Change of the ice rheology with climatic transitions – implication on ice flow modelling and dating of the EPICA Dome C core

چکیده

The study of the distribution of the crystallographic orientations (the fabric) along ice cores supplies information on the past and current ice flows of ice-sheets. Beside the usually observed formation of a vertical single maximum fabric, the EPICA Dome Con-cordia ice core (EDC) shows an abrupt and unexpected strenghtening of its fabric dur-5 ing termination II around 1750 m depth. Such strengthenings were already observed for sites located on an ice-sheet. This suggests that horizontal shear could occur along the EDC core. Moreover, the change in the fabric leads to a modification of the viscosity between neighbouring ice layers. Through the use of an anisotropic ice flow model, we quantify the change in viscosity and investigate its implication on ice flow and dating.

Towards orbital dating of the EPICA Dome C ice core using δO2/N2

Based on a composite of several measurement series performed on ice samples stored at −25 C or −50 C, we present and discuss the first δO2/N2 record of trapped air from the EPICA Dome C (EDC) ice core covering the period between 300 and 800 ka (thousands of years before present). The samples stored at −25 C show clear gas loss affecting the precision and mean level of the δO2/N2 record. Two dif...

Deformation of grain boundaries in polar ice

– The ice microstructure (grain boundaries) is a key feature used to study ice evolution and to investigate past climatic changes. We studied a deep ice core, in Dome Concordia, Antarctica, which records past mechanical deformations. We measured a “texture tensor” which characterizes the pattern geometry and reveals local heterogeneities of deformation along the core. These results question key...

New constraints on the gas age-ice age difference along the EPICA ice cores, 0–50 kyr

Gas is trapped in polar ice sheets at ∼50–120m below the surface and is therefore younger than the surrounding ice. Firn densification models are used to evaluate this ice age-gas age difference (∆age) in the past. However, such models are not well tested on low accumulation and cold sites of the East Antarctic plateau, especially for 5 periods with different climatic conditions. Here we bring ...

On the gas-ice depth difference (1depth) along the EPICA Dome C ice core

We compare a variety of methods for estimating the gas/ice depth offset (1depth) at EPICA Dome C (EDC, East Antarctica). (1) Purely based on modelling efforts, 1depth can be estimated combining a firn densification with an ice flow model. (2) The diffusive column height can be estimated from δ15N and converted to 1depth using an ice flow model and assumptions about past average firn density and...
